- The overall goal of the lesson – “Effective teaching of mathematics establishes clear goals for the mathematics that students are learning, situates goals within learning progressions, and uses the goals to guide instructional decisions.” (NCTM, 2018)

- Questioning to promote further analysis – “Effective teaching of mathematics uses purposeful questions to assess and advance students’ reasoning and sense-making about important mathematical ideas and relationships” (NCTM, 2018)
- Discussion – “Class discussions offer students opportunities to test their ideas and opinions against the ideas and opinions of their peers.” (University of Pittsburgh, 2018)
- Evaluation – “Evaluation is used by the teacher to provide feedback to students and to check for understanding in the teaching and learning process. (The Alberta Teachers’ Association, 2018)
